Jos Buttler and captain Eoin Morgan hammered a career-best 150 and 103 respectively as England defeated the West Indies by 29 runs in the fourth ODI in Grenada.

Even though England walloped a record-breaking 24 sixes and scored 418 in the match, it almost wasn’t enough as West Indies opener Chris Gayle continued his sublime run of form by smashing a 97-ball 162.

Being put in to bat first, England made a superb start to their innings as Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales amassed a 100-run partnership, during which Bairstow brought up his fifty, before he was clean bowled by Oshane Thomas for 56, which came off 43 balls and included four boundaries and four sixes.

Joe Root only made five runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Thomas, while Hales went on to score a 73-ball 82, which included eight boundaries and two sixes, before he was dismissed by Ashley Nurse.

Buttler and Morgan put England firmly in the driver’s seat after Hales’ dismissal as they forged a 204-run stand, during which both batsmen surpassed their hundreds.

Morgan ended up scoring 103, which came off 88 balls and included eight boundaries and six sixes, before he was caught by West Indies skipper Jason Holder at long-off off the bowling of Sheldon Cottrell.

Buttler and Ben Stokes added 48 runs to the score before Buttler was clean bowled by Carlos Brathwaite for 150, which came off 77 deliveries and included 13 boundaries and 12 sixes.

Thanks to Buttler and Morgan, England finished on 418/6 off their 50 overs.

Thomas and Brathwaite picked up two wickets apiece, while Nurse and Cottrell chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 419 to win, the West Indies lost opener John Campbell early on as he was sent packing by Mark Wood for 15.

Shai Hope was the next to go as he was caught behind off the bowling of Wood for five runs.

Gayle and Darren Bravo steadied the ship with a 176-run partnership, during which Gayle registered his hundred and Bravo his fifty, before Bravo was caught by Stokes at mid-on off the bowling of Wood for 61, which came off 59 balls and included four boundaries and four sixes.

Shimron Hetmyer fell shortly after, but Gayle and Holder added 69 runs to the score before Gayle was cleaned up by Stokes for 162, which came off 97 balls and included 11 boundaries and 14 sixes.

Gayle also brought up a special milestone during his knock as he became the 14th player to score 10,000 runs in ODI cricket.

Holder went on to score 29 before he was stumped by Buttler off the bowling of Adil Rashid.

Nurse and Brathwaite refused to go down without a fight as they mustered an 88-run stand before Nurse was removed by Rashid for 43.

Rashid struck again the very next ball as he took out Brathwaite for 50, which came off 36 balls and included four boundaries and two sixes.

Rashid then sent Devendra Bishoo packing two balls later before sealing the deal for England by having Thomas stumped for a golden duck, which led to the West Indies being bowled out for 389.

Rashid was the most successful bowler with five wickets, while Wood took four and Stokes claimed one.

Buttler was named Man of the Match.
