Veteran South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has gone up against some of the best bowlers to ever play the sport, but he admitted that Pakistan seamer Mohammad Asif was the toughest of the lot.
While Amla pointed out that Asif was not the quickest bowler he faced, he noted that the 36-year-old’s accuracy and ability to swing the ball both ways made him an absolute nightmare to bat against.
“Mohammad Asif is the best one. I know he got banned for match-fixing but at that stage, he was the best fast bowler I’ve ever faced,” Amla was quoted as saying by the Business Recorder. “He was not that quick, bowling around 135kph maybe, but his accuracy was phenomenal.
“He landed on first stump and I didn’t know [whether] the ball was nipping away or nipping in. He tested your defences. And funny enough as the years have gone by, meeting other cricketers around the world, so many guys say exactly the same thing. They said Mohammad Asif [was] a magician of the ball.”
