Wasim Akram: “He has got the ability to win us matches, however, the on and off playing cycle will not be good for him”

Former Pakistan left-arm seamer Wasim Akram has questioned the way in which the national team are utilizing all-rounder Faheem Ashraf.

Akram believes Faheem has the ability to be a match-winner for Pakistan, but pointed out that being in and out of the team on a constant basis will have an adverse impact on his confidence.

This was evident in the recent three-Test series against South Africa, where Faheem featured in the third Test after Pakistan had already lost the series.

“What do we want to do with Faheem Ashraf, I believe he is a good all-rounder in the limited overs format,” Akram was quoted as saying by the Business Recorder. “Being an impact player he has got the ability to win us matches, however, the on and off playing cycle will not be good for him as well as for Pakistan.”

Head coach Mickey Arthur had earlier said that he was concerned about Faheem’s ability to score runs and be a genuine all-rounder. But, Akram feels that the 25-year-old will never be able to prove his worth unless he is given adequate opportunities to represent Pakistan.

“I understand that the management is not fully confident on Faheem’s abilities, but to get selected in the Playing XI, one needs to perform consistently just like Shadab Khan. But, he (Faheem) has got the talent,” Akram said.
