Josh Philippe put on a show at the Sydney Cricket Ground as he smashed an unbeaten 86 to lead the Sydney Sixers to a nine-wicket win over the Hobart Hurricanes.

For the Hurricanes, this marked only their second loss of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) season.

Being put in to bat first, the Hurricanes got off to an excellent start as captain Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short amassed a 67-run partnership before Short was caught by Jordan Silk at deep midwicket off the bowling of Benjamin Manenti for 32.

Caleb Jewell fell shortly after, but Wade and Ben McDermott steadied things with a 67-run partnership before Wade was dismissed by Sean Abbott for a 51-ball 64, which included four boundaries and two sixes.

McDermott went on to score a 31-ball 41, which included two sixes, while George Bailey hammered a nine-ball 21 as the Hurricanes finished on 172/4.

Manenti, Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis and Tom Curran picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 173 to win, the Sixers were dealt a big blow on the fourth ball of their innings as opener Daniel Hughes was caught by Johan Botha at slip off the bowling of James Faulkner for six runs.

However, that was to be the Hurricanes’ last taste of success as Philippe and James Vince guided their side to victory with an unbeaten 167-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their fifties.

Philippe finished on 86, which came off 49 balls and included nine boundaries and three sixes, while Vince remained undefeated on 74, which came off 50 deliveries and included six boundaries and two sixes.

Faulkner was the only bowler to take a wicket.

Philippe was named Man of the Match.
