Marcus Stoinis took three wickets and followed that up with an unbeaten 70 as the Melbourne Stars defeated the Melbourne Renegades by six wickets.

Being put in to bat first, the Renegades got off to a brisk start before opener Marcus Harris was brilliantly caught by Dwayne Bravo at mid-on off the bowling of Liam Plunkett for 15.

Captain Aaron Finch scored 14 runs before he was dismissed by Jackson Bird, who cleaned up Sam Harper two balls later.

Cameron White was the next to go as he was clean bowled by Stoinis for one run.

With the Renegades struggling at 33/4, Mohammad Nabi and Tom Cooper came to the rescue with a 41-run partnership before Cooper was sent packing by Plunkett for 24.

Nabi went on to make 28 before he was caught by Evan Gulbis at long-on off the bowling of Adam Zampa, who also removed Dan Christian for 18.

Stoinis then removed Jack Wildermuth and Cameron Boyce in the same over before the Renegades were bowled out for 121 when Harry Gurney was cleaned up by Bravo for a golden duck.

Stoinis was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Bird, Plunkett and Zampa snapped up two wickets apiece. As for Bravo, he chipped in with one.

Chasing 122 to win, the Stars were dealt a big blow on the second ball of their innings as opener Ben Dunk was clean bowled by Nabi for a golden duck.

Peter Handscomb only mustered eight runs before he was caught by White at cover off the bowling of Kane Richardson.

Stars skipper Glenn Maxwell was run out soon after for seven runs, which left his side reeling at 35/3.

Stoinis and Nic Maddinson stabilised the innings with a 63-run partnership, during which Stoinis brought up his half-century, before Maddinson was dismissed by Richardson for 19.

Stoinis and Bravo mopped up the remaining runs as the Stars reached their target with four balls to spare.

Stoinis finished on 70, which came off 65 balls and included seven boundaries, while Bravo remained undefeated on 17, which came off nine deliveries and included two boundaries and a six.

Richardson was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Nabi claimed one.

Stoinis was named Man of the Match.
