Ex-Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja believes that veteran batsman Azhar Ali is only keeping hold of his place in the Test team since he has played more than 70 Test matches.
Azhar has struggled with the bat in the ongoing Test series against South Africa, as in the first two Tests, he made scores of 36, 0, 2 and 6.
The 33-year-old’s woes continued in the first innings of the ongoing third Test in Johannesburg, where he was caught behind off the bowling of Vernon Philander for a golden duck.
With Azhar failing to provide runs and stability as a senior player atop the order, Ramiz questioned whether he should be in the Test squad any longer.
“He didn’t seem to be in control of his shots, the only reason that he is in the team is because he has played 70 odd Tests,” Ramiz was quoted as saying by the Business Recorder.
