Sam Harper struck an unbeaten 56 and Usman Khan Shinwari took three wickets to lead to the Melbourne Renegades to an eight-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat.

Opting to bowl first, the Renegades got an early breakthrough as Heat opener Max Bryant was caught by Mohammad Nabi off the bowling of Shinwari for 18.

Captain Chris Lynn only scored 14 runs before he was caught by Nabi at long-off off the bowling of Cameron Boyce.

Matt Renshaw fell shortly after for eight runs, while Brendon McCullum scored a 47-ball 50, which included three boundaries and a six, before he was dismissed by Boyce.

The Heat began to lose wickets in a hurry after McCullum’s departure, but Ben Cutting’s quickfire 20 proved crucial in helping his side finish on 144/8.

Shinwari was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Boyce snapped up two, and Jack Wildermuth and Joe Mennie chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 145 to win, the Renegades got off to a brisk start before opener Mackenzie Harvey was caught by James Pattinson at short fine leg off the bowling of Brendan Doggett for 10 runs.

Marcus Harris, who opened the batting with Harvey, managed to make 28 before he was clean bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

That was to be the Heat’s last taste of success for the rest of the match as Harper and skipper Tom Cooper forged an unbeaten 106-run partnership, during which Harper brought up his fifty, to lead the Renegades to victory with 26 balls to spare.

Harper finished on 56, which came off 40 balls and included seven boundaries and a six, while Cooper remained undefeated on 36, which came off 28 deliveries and included three boundaries and a six.

Doggett and Mujeeb claimed one wicket each.

Harper was named Man of the Match.
