Peter Handscomb smashed a superb 70 as the Melbourne Stars secured their first win by beating the Sydney Sixers by five wickets.

Opting to bowl first, the Stars got their first breakthrough on the second ball of the match as Sixers opener Jack Edwards was stumped by Handscomb off the bowling of Adam Zampa for four runs.

Joe Denly only scored 14 runs before he was caught by Dwayne Bravo at long-on off the bowling of Stars captain Glenn Maxwell.

Daniel Hughes made a quickfire 20 before he was clean bowled by Jackson Coleman.

Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane then took out Sixers skipper Moises Henriques for nine runs before Bravo cleaned up Josh Philippe for seven.

With Lamichhane removing Tom Curran and Coleman sending Sean Abbott and Steve O’Keefe packing, the Sixers found themselves struggling.

However, Jordan Silk hammered an unbeaten 41 off 37 balls, which included two boundaries, to help his side finish on 130/9.

Coleman was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Lamichhane and Bravo snapped up two wickets apiece. As for Zampa and Maxwell, they chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 131 to win, the Stars lost opener Ben Dunk on the sixth ball of the innings as he was caught by Ben Dwarshuis at backward point off the bowling of O’Keefe for four runs.

Handscomb and Nick Larkin steadied the innings with an 87-run partnership, during which Handscomb surpassed his fifty, before Larkin was dismissed by O’Keefe for 20.

Handscomb went on to make a 35-ball 70, which included nine boundaries and three sixes, before he was removed by Dwarshuis.

Even though Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis fell shortly after, the Stars ended up reaching their target with 31 balls to spare.

Dwarshuis was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while O’Keefe claimed two.

Handscomb was named Man of the Match.
