Pakistan struck twice in quick succession after Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq tormented New Zealand with their knocks of 134 and 104 respectively on the third day in Abu Dhabi.

Starting off the day on 139/3, Azhar and Shafiq converted their 54-run partnership into a 201-run stand, during which Azhar surpassed his century, while Shafiq was on the verge of bringing up his hundred.

Azhar ended up making a 297-ball 134, which included 12 boundaries, before he was caught by Ajaz Patel at short fine leg off the bowling of debutant William Somerville.

Shafiq went on to score 104, which came off 259 deliveries and included 14 boundaries, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Patel.

Pakistan began to collapse once Shafiq was gone, courtesy of Somerville, as they went from 304/5 to being bowled out for 348, which gave them a 74-run lead.

Somerville was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Patel and Trent Boult snapped up two wickets apiece. As for Tim Southee, he chipped in with one.

Trailing by 74 runs, New Zealand lost opener Jeet Raval in the fourth over of their second innings as he was given out lbw off the bowling of debutant Shaheen Shah Afridi for a duck.

Tom Latham, who opened the batting with Raval, only scored 10 runs before he was caught by Haris Sohail at deep square leg off the bowling of Yasir Shah.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and Somerville, who was sent in as the nightwatchman, managed to forge an unbeaten two-run partnership before stumps was called.

Williamson finished on 14, which came off 20 balls and included a boundary, while Somerville remained undefeated on one.

Afridi and Yasir claimed one wicket each.

New Zealand ended day three on 26/2 and will continue batting on Thursday at 10:00 local time or 06:00 GMT.
