Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Williams scored 88 to keep his side afloat on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet.

Opting to bat first, Zimbabwe made a disappointing start to their innings as opener Brian Chari was clean bowled by Taijul Islam for 13.

Brendan Taylor failed to have an impact with the bat as well as he was caught by Nazmul Hossain Shanto at short leg off the bowling of Taijul for six runs.

Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza, who opened the batting with Chari, went on to score 52, which came off 105 balls and included four boundaries and two sixes, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Abu Jayed.

Williams and Sikandar Raza added 44 runs to the score before Raza was cleaned up by debutant Nazmul Islam for 19.

Williams and Peter Moor kept the runs flowing with a 72-run partnership, during which Williams surpassed his half-century, before he was dismissed by Mahmudullah for 88, which came off 173 deliveries and included nine boundaries.

Moor and wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva ensured Zimbabwe didn’t lose anymore wickets as they amassed an unbeaten 35-run partnership before stumps was called.

Moor finished on 37, which came off 122 balls and included four boundaries, while Chakabva remained undefeated on a 48-ball 20, which included two boundaries.

Taijul Islam was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Jayed, Nazmul and Mahmudullah claimed one wicket each.

Zimbabwe ended day one on 236/5 and will continue batting on Sunday at 10:00 local time or 04:00 GMT.
