Shai Hope fell five runs short of his third ODI century

Shai Hope struck a superb 95 and Ashley Nurse put up an all-round performance as the West Indies beat India by 43 runs in the third ODI in Pune to level the series at 1-1.

Choosing to bowl first, India got the early breakthrough they were looking for as West Indies opener Chandrapaul Hemraj was caught behind off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah for 15.

Kieran Powell managed to make 21 before he was dismissed by Bumrah.

Marlon Samuels failed to have an impact with the bat as he was caught behind off the bowling of Khaleel Ahmed for nine runs.

Hope and Shimron Hetmyer stabilised the innings with a 56-run partnership before Hetmyer was stumped by MS Dhoni off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav for a 21-ball 37.

Rovman Powell was the next to go, but Hope and West Indies captain Jason Holder steadied things with a 76-run stand before Holder was sent packing by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 32.

Debutant Fabian Allen fell shortly after, while Hope went on to score 95, which came off 113 balls and included six boundaries and three sixes, before he was clean bowled by Bumrah.

Nurse and Kemar Roach added 56 runs to the score before Nurse was given out lbw off the bowling of Bumrah for a 22-ball 40.

Thanks to Hope and Nurse, the West Indies finished on 283/9.

Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Kuldeep snapped up two, and Kumar, Khaleel and Yuzvendra Chahal chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 284 to win, India lost Rohit Sharma early on as he was clean bowled by Holder for eight runs.

Shikhar Dhawan and India skipper Virat Kohli made up for the loss of Rohit with a 79-run partnership before Dhawan was trapped lbw off the bowling of Nurse for 35.

Ambati Rayudu scored 22 before he was cleaned up by Obed McCoy, while Rishabh Pant was caught behind off the bowling of Nurse for 24.

India began to lose wickets at regular intervals after Pant’s dismissal, but Kohli scored 107, which came off 119 balls and included 10 boundaries and a six.

Kohli made history during his knock as he became the first Indian player to score three successive ODI centuries.

Despite his heroics, Kohli could not lead his side to victory as India were bowled out for 240.

Samuels was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Nurse, McCoy and Holder took two wickets apiece. As for Roach, he claimed one.

Nurse was named Man of the Match.
