Legendary Pakistan left-arm seamer Wasim Akram believes the national team will have a psychological advantage over India going into their highly-anticipated Asia Cup clash since the men in blue will be without captain Virat Kohli.
India decided to rest Kohli for the tournament due to his workload this year, and named Rohit Sharma captain, while Shikhar Dhawan will serve as vice-captain.
While Akram admitted that India are still favourites to win the Asia Cup, he pointed out that Pakistan will be given a major boost by the fact that their arch-rivals will be missing their best player.
“Kohli has been rested and that is the right decision. When Gavaskar, Azhar and Tendulkar did not play, I was high on confidence. The Pakistan bowlers will be psychologically boosted with Kohli being rested,” Akram was quoted as saying by India Today.
Despite this, he added that “India [are] favourites on paper”.
India and Pakistan will go head to head on September 19 in Dubai.
