Legendary India all-rounder Kapil Dev has admitted that he has doubts about whether the national team can win the Asia Cup without captain Virat Kohli.

Kohli has been rested for the tournament due to the hectic workload he has had this year, and as a result of India’s packed scheduled towards the end of 2018.

Dev admitted that India have developed a tendency to rely on Kohli, but he conceded that it will be interesting to see who steps up and shines in the 29-year-old’s absence.

Rohit Sharma has been appointed captain, while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan was named vice-captain.

“If you start depending on one player to win a championship, you are not going to win that championship,” he was quoted as saying by The Gulf Today. “Yes, Virat Kohli is a very important player and in the last seven-eight years, he has played a very important role and has been instrumental in winning many matches.

“The team have to play like a team. It is very important. Sometimes it is good when your best player is not playing. It is then they come to know how good they are.

“I would like to see the Indian team without Kohli, how they will apply themselves. But if they can do it without him, they will be a much stronger team. But for now, it is very difficult to say whether they are going to do that or not.”
