Sri Lanka batsman Dinesh Chandimal is set to miss the Asia Cup later this month after sustaining a hairline fracture on the middle finger of his right hand.
Chandimal suffered the injury while playing in Sri Lanka’s recently concluded Twenty20 domestic competition.
Should Chandimal miss the tournament in the United Arab Emirates, he will likely be replaced by wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella, who was surprisingly left out of the original squad.
Dickwella has been one of Sri Lanka’s most consistent performers as of late and also had a decent showing in the recent ODI series against South Africa as he scored 158 runs at an average of 31.60.
However, he failed to impress in Sri Lanka’s domestic Twenty20 tournament as he only mustered 24 runs in four games.
Meanwhile, spinner Akila Dananjaya will miss the first two games of the Asia Cup at the very least as he is waiting for the birth of his first child.
Sri Lanka will begin their Asia Cup campaign against Bangladesh on September 15, and will take on Afghanistan two days later.
