India have called up uncapped batsmen Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari for the last two Tests against England.
The duo, aged 18 and 24 respectively, were drafted into the Test squad after India decided to drop opening batsman Murali Vijay and spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Vijay has struggled to have an impact as he scored 26 runs in two Tests at an average of 6.50, while Kuldeep went wicketless after being picked for the second Test against England at Lord’s.
Kuldeep will now play for India A in their two four-day matches against Australia A in Visakhapatnam.
Shaw captained India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup in February, and has since been included in the India A squad. He also featured in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), where he played for the Delhi Daredevils.
In the 14 first-class matches he has played, Shaw has scored 1,418 runs, which includes seven centuries and five fifties, at an average of 56.72.
Vihari, meanwhile, has also been playing for India A, and has featured in 63 first-class matches, where he has accumulated 5,142 runs, which includes 15 hundreds and 24 half-centuries, at an average of 59.79.
Meanwhile, India head coach Ravi Shastri confirmed that spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been nursing a hip injury, will be fit for the fourth Test in Southampton on August 30.
“Ashwin will be okay,” Shastri was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “The fact that he bowled 20-25 overs clearly suggests it [the hip injury] is not that bad. This break will be ideal for him. If there was a Test match starting in three days’ time, then it would have been a problem.”
