India seamer Ishant Sharma punished England with a five-wicket haul on the third day at Edgbaston, but after being set 194 runs to win, India faltered and found themselves five wickets down when stumps was called.

Starting off the day on 9/1, England doubled their score before opener Keaton Jennings was caught by Lokesh Rahul at second slip off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin for eight runs.

Ashwin then dismissed England captain Joe Root for 14, while Dawid Malan made 20 before being caught by Ajinkya Rahane at gully off the bowling of Ishant.

With Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler all being taken out by Ishant in quick succession, England found themselves reeling at 87/7.

However, Sam Curran and Adil Rashid came to the rescue as they amassed a 48-run partnership before Rashid was clean bowled by Umesh Yadav for 16.

Curran and Broad continued to frustrate India as they forged a 41-run stand, during which Curran surpassed his maiden half-century, before Broad was removed by Ishant for 11.

England were eventually bowled out for 180, which set India a target of 194 to win, when Curran was caught behind off the bowling of Yadav for a career-best 63, which came off 65 balls and included nine boundaries and two sixes.

Ishant was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets, while Ashwin took three and Yadav chipped in with two.

Chasing 194 to win, India made a poor start to their innings as opener Murali Vijay was given out lbw off the bowling of Broad for six runs.

Shikhar Dhawan, who opened the batting with Vijay, made 13 before he was caught behind off the bowling of Broad.

Like Dhawan, Rahul scored 13 runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Stokes.

Rahane failed to have much of an impact with the bat as he was caught behind off the bowling of Curran for two runs.

Ashwin was the next to go as he was caught behind off the bowling of James Anderson for 13.

With India in trouble at 78/5, captain Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik managed to amass an unbeaten 32-run partnership before stumps was called.

Kohli finished on 43 off 76 balls, which included three boundaries, while Karthik remained undefeated on 18 off 44 deliveries, which included two boundaries.

Broad was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Stokes, Curran and Anderson claimed one wicket each.

India ended day three on 110/5 and will continue batting on Saturday at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
