Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal struck a magnificent 130 not out to lead his side to a 48-run win over the West Indies in the first ODI in Guyana.

Tamim was brilliantly supported by all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who scored 97.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh were dealt a big blow on the seventh ball of the match as opener Anamul Haque was caught by Ashley Nurse at second slip off the bowling of West Indies skipper Jason Holder for a duck.

Tamim and Shakib made up for the loss of Anamul as they amassed a mammoth 207-run partnership, during which both batsmen were three runs away from bringing up their hundreds.

However, Shakib never reached the triple figure mark as he was caught by Shimron Hetmyer off the bowling of Devendra Bishoo for 97, which came off 121 balls and included six boundaries.

Sabbir Rahman fell shortly after for three runs, while wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim hammered an 11-ball 30 before being removed on the penultimate ball of the innings.

Tamim went on to score 130 off 160 balls, which included 10 boundaries and three sixes, as Bangladesh finished on 279/4.

Bishoo was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Holder and Andre Russell chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 280 to win, the West Indies lost opener Evin Lewis early on as he was caught by Mahmudullah at mid-off off the bowling of Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza for 17.

Shai Hope only made six runs, while Lewis’ opening partner Chris Gayle scored 40 before being run out by Mahmudullah.

Jason Mohammed was caught behind off the bowling of Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 10 runs, while Hetmyer, who was the only batsman to really put up a fight, was sent packing by Mustafizur Rahman for 52, which came off 78 balls and included five boundaries.

The West Indies continued to lose wickets at regular intervals once Hetmyer was gone, and even though Bishoo and Alzarri Joseph both scored an unbeaten 29, it was not enough to lead the hosts to victory as they concluded their innings on 231/9.

Mortaza was the most successful bowler with four wickets, while Mustafizur took two, and Mehidy and Rubel Hossain claimed one wicket each.

Tamim was named Man of the Match.
