India spinner Kuldeep Yadav could add to his two Tests next month after he was picked in the Test squad for the first three matches against England.
Kuldeep, who last played Test cricket in August 2017, has been in sublime form in the limited overs formats and has thus been rewarded with the call-up to the Test squad.
In the Twenty20 series against England, Kuldeep took five wickets in two matches at an average of 11.60.
He followed that up with nine wickets, which included a career-best six-for, in the three-match ODI series at an average of 16.44.
Meanwhile, pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will return back to India and undergo an intense four-week rehabilitation programme after aggravating a lower back injury during the third ODI.
Kumar will miss the first three Tests against England, but could be fit for the last two. However, this will depend on his fitness.
“Bhuvneshwar Kumar aggravated a lower back condition in the 3rd ODI against England,” a BCCI release said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “His condition is being assessed by the BCCI medical team and a call on his inclusion in the Test squad will be made soon.”
Fellow seamer Jasprit Bumrah will also miss the first Test as he continues to recover from a broken thumb, but could feature in the second Test if he make a sufficient recovery.
“Jasprit Bumrah, who has been included in the squad, will be available for selection from the 2nd Test onwards based on his fitness,” the release said.
The other notable inclusion was uncapped batsman Rishabh Pant, who was one of the standout performers in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
Pant, who played for the Delhi Daredevils, finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 684 runs in 14 matches, which included a century and five fifties, at an average of 52.61 and a strike-rate of 173.60.
As for his first-class career, Pant has featured in 22 matches and scored 1,625 runs, which includes four hundreds and six half-centuries, at an average of 54.16 and a strike-rate of 98.54.
The five-Test series between England and India will get underway on August 1 at Edgbaston.
