Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal will miss four ODIs in addition to the ongoing two-Test series against South Africa due to violating the part of the ICC’s code of conduct that relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.
Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and team manager Asanka Gurusinha suffered the same fate as the trio were all charged with a level 3 offence by ICC chief executive David Richardson after Sri Lanka refused to take to the field on the third day of the second Test against the West Indies in St Lucia. As a result of their actions, play was suspended for two hours.
ICC judicial commissioner Michael Beloff decided to hand out the harshest punishment possible due to the severity of the case.
Six demerit points have also been added to Chandimal’s record, meaning he now has 10 in total. Should he be given two more demerit points over the next two years, he will be suspended for three Tests, six limited overs matches or a combination of the two depending on Sri Lanka’s schedule.
