India pace bowler Mohammed Shami has been sidelined for the historic Test against Afghanistan, who will be making their debut in the longest format, after failing a fitness test.
Shami underwent a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy, but it is understood that he was hampered by a right hamstring injury.
As a result, he was removed from India’s squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Bangalore in order to be given adequate time to recover ahead of the national team’s five-Test series against England.
With Shami out, uncapped seamer Navdeep Saini has been selected as his replacement.
The 25-year-old was Delhi’s highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy with 34 wickets in eight games at an average of 22.73.
It is also believed that Shami struggled with niggles throughout the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he represented the Delhi Daredevils.
While he managed to play four games with the problems he was dealing with, the franchise’s coaching staff decided to bench him for the rest of the tournament once it was discovered that Shami could not run properly.
The one-off Test between India and Afghanistan begins on Thursday.
