Pakistan bowling coach Azhar Mahmood has called on left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir to step up and take more responsibility when he has the ball in his hands.

Amir is considered to be one of Pakistan’s frontline pace bowlers, but Mahmood “wants more” from the 26-year-old, especially after he finished with figures of 1-45 off 15 overs in the national team’s warm-up match against Kent.

Since returning from a five-year spot-fixing ban, Amir has only taken 44 wickets in 16 Tests at an average of 37.25.

“We want more from Amir, as bowling coach I want more from Amir,” Mahmood was quoted as saying by Sport24. “If you see his record since he came back it’s not great, but he was coming back after five years out. He needs to take a bit more responsibility and get more wickets for us.

“If he’s the leader of this attack, he needs to show us a bit more. I’m sure he will do that and that’s what we want from him.”
