Virender Sehwag: “We are favourites to win the 2019 World Cup”

Virender Sehwag is confident that India have what it takes to win the 2019 World Cup, which will be held in England and Wales.

India, who triumphed in the 2011 World Cup, are the top-ranked ODI side in the world and have been in exceptional form in the 50-over format as of late, with their most recent victory being a comprehensive 5-1 win over South Africa. Their win was a historic one as it saw India secure their first-ever bilateral ODI series in South Africa.

“The kind of ODI team we have, we are favourites to win the 2019 World Cup,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) website.

Meanwhile, Sehwag also feels the Test team are capable of winning series abroad, even though they were beaten 2-1 by the Proteas in their most recent Test series.

This team has the capability to win a Test series outside India, with the kind of bowling and batting we have. We just missed winning the Test series in South Africa, or else we could have created history,” he said.

India will tour Australia later this year, but the Baggy Greens will be without Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft as they have all been banned for their involvement in the ball tampering scandal that shocked the cricketing world.

However, Sehwag feels that even if the trio were playing, India will still come out on top.

“It does not matter if they are with the team or not. Even then, we will win,” he said. “In our days, we had (Javagal) Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar and Ashish Nehra, but these four never played together. This team has lot more capability and can deliver in any conditions.”
