The West Indies will take on Pakistan in a three-match Twenty20 series next month, but the men from the Caribbean will be missing a number of their top players.
Captain Carlos Brathwaite, big-hitting opening batsman Chris Gayle and all-rounder Jason Holder are just some of the players who opted to skip the series.
“We had a few players that opted not to tour Pakistan, due to their or their families’ security concerns and Cricket West Indies (CWI) have fully accepted their position,” West Indies chief selector Courtney Browne was quoted by Yahoo Sports as saying.
As a result, Jason Mohammed has been appointed as captain, while two new faces – Andre McCarthy and Odean Smith – have been drafted into the side.
Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin has been recalled, while all-rounder Marlon Samuels, spinner Samuel Badree, and batsmen Chadwick Walton and Andre Fletcher also made the cut.
“Denesh brings a lot of experience and an opportunity to restart his international career,” Browne said. “While he will be the primary wicketkeeper in the squad, we also have available Chadwick Walton and Andre Fletcher as back up.”
Cricket West Indies Chief Executive Officer Jonny Grave was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying: “Following the successful hosting of the Pakistan Super League final in Karachi on the weekend, our squad are now en route to Pakistan for our three-match T20I series.
This tour is a further major step for our friends at the PCB to bring their cricket back home, and we are pleased that our players and support staff have recognised this and supported this venture.
“Independent security advisors Eastern Star International have confirmed to both CWI and WIPA that they are satisfied the risk is manageable and can be mitigated to an acceptable level. We have made it very clear to the players and support staff that had personal reservations about this tour that we fully understand and respect their position.”
The three-match Twenty20 series will be held on April 1, 2 and 3 at the National Stadium in Karachi. The series will also mark the first time Karachi has held international cricket since 2009.
