Iconic India batsman Sachin Tendulkar has backed Cricket Australia’s decision to ban Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft for their involvement in the ball tampering scandal.

Smith and Warner were banned for 12 months, while Bancroft was suspended for nine months. Smith will not be allowed to captain Australia for two months, while Warner won’t be considered for leadership roles going forward.

The incident occurred on the third day of the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Taking to Twitter to let his thoughts on the matter be known, Tendulkar said: “Cricket has been known as a gentleman’s game. It’s a game that I believe should be played in the purest form.

“Whatever has happened is unfortunate but the right decision has been taken to uphold the integrity of the game. Winning is important but the way you win is more important.”

Tendulkar also admitted that the trio will have to live with what they have done for the rest of their lives.

“They are regretting and hurting and will have to live with the consequences of their act,” he said. “Spare a thought for their families as they have much to endure along with the players. Time for all of us to take a step back and give them some space.”
