Former India left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra was less than impressed that Australia captain Steve Smith and opener Cameron Bancroft tampered with the ball during the third Test against South Africa. However, he added that he was pleased with the fact that they openly admitted their mistake and were genuinely sorry about what they had done.

The whole incident started when Bancroft was seen taking a mysterious yellow paper-like item out of his pocket and putting it down his trousers on the third day of the third Test in Cape Town.

After admitting that they had attempted to alter the condition of the ball, Smith was banned for one Test and fined 100 percent of his match fee, while Bancroft was docked 75 percent of his match fee and handed three demerit points.

“These kinds of incidents have happened even in the past,” Nehra was quoted as saying by ANI. “If the International Cricket Council (ICC) feels that Cameron Bancroft or Steve Smith have done something wrong, then definitely they should be penalised. If they have admitted their mistakes, then it’s a great thing from their side.”
