Shardul Thakur ripped through Sri Lanka’s batting line-up with a career-best four-wicket haul to lead India to a comfortable six-wicket win in the fourth match of the Nidahas Trophy in Colombo.

With the match having been delayed by rain and a wet outfield, it was reduced to a 19-over affair and India opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

Sri Lanka made a brisk start to their innings before opener Danushka Gunathilaka was caught by Suresh Raina at midwicket off the bowling of Thakur for 17.

Kusal Perera fell shortly after for three runs as he was clean bowled by Washington Sundar.

However, Kusal Mendis and Upul Tharanga stabilised the innings with a 62-run partnership before Tharanga was cleaned up by Vijay Shankar for 22.

Sri Lanka completely collapsed once Tharaga was gone as they went from 96/3 to finishing on 152/9 off their 20 overs.

Mendis was dismissed during this period as he was caught by stand-in captain Rohit Sharma off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal for 55, which came off 38 balls and included three boundaries and three sixes.

Thakur was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Sundar snapped up two and Chahal, Shankar and Jaydev Unadkat chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 153 to win, India lost Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan early on as they were both sent packing by Akila Dananjaya for 11 and eight runs respectively.

Raina and Lokesh Rahul steadied things with a 40-run stand before Raina was removed by Nuwan Pradeep for 27.

Rahul went on to score 18 before he trod on his stumps and was given out hit wicket.

However, that was to be Sri Lanka’s last taste of success for the remainder of the match as Manish Pandey and Dinesh Karthik finished things off with an unbeaten 68-run partnership.

Pandey ended up making 42 off 31 balls, which included three boundaries and a six, while Karthik remained undefeated on 39 off 25 deliveries, which included five boundaries.

Dananjaya was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Pradeep and Jeevan Mendis claimed one wicket each.

Thakur was named Man of the Match.
