Police have charged India pace bowler Mohammed Shami with attempted murder, assault and criminal intimidation.

The charges come after Shami’s wife, Hasin Jahan, claimed that he abused her and had extramarital affairs with numerous women. She also alleged that Shami attempted to commit suicide while in a previous relationship.

A senior police officer confirmed that under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Shami will be sent a notice and will have to appear before investigators.

“Kolkata police’s detective department has already started an investigation. We will look into all the allegations and carry out a thorough probe,” joint commissioner (crime) Praveen Tripathi was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Jahan’s lawyer, Zakir Hossain, was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying: “I have been informed by Kolkata Police officers over phone that they have slapped non-bailable sections against Shami and starting a case against him.”

Shami’s mother Anjuman Ara Begum, sister Sabina Anjum, brother Mohammad Hasib Ahmed and his wife Shama Parveen were also booked.

“My husband’s elder brother, Hasib Ahmad, raped me when I went to my in-laws’ place in Uttar Pradesh last year,” Jahan said.

She added: “He said since I was a model, these things should not bother me much and forced me into a room with his brother, who started touching me inappropriately. He opened the door and let me go only when I screamed.”

Jahan also revealed that many of Shami’s relatives had attempted to contact her after she filed a complaint with the police.

“I had informed each one of them about the torture Shami was inflicting on me. But none of them did anything, and instead they urged me to adjust as I was a woman. Why should I listen to them now?” she said.

Responding to the allegations against him, Shami said that his wife might be mentally unstable.

“What is being said about my personal life is completely false,” he said. “It’s definitely part of a big conspiracy against me. This is just an attempt to defame me.

“I don’t know what she is up to. She needs to explain what has changed so much in these few days. We even had a great Holi celebration earlier this month. Now she is suddenly levelling all these accusations on me. I think she has lost her mental balance or it might be her plan to sabotage my career.”

When asked about the BCCI’s decision to withhold his contract, Shami said: “Whatever the BCCI has done, it must have done after giving a lot of thought. I have full faith in the BCCI. It will take the right decision regarding my career.”
