South Africa opener Heino Kuhn has revealed that he opted to sign a Kolpak deal with Kent since Cricket South Africa said “that they were looking past me in all three formats”.

Kuhn represented South Africa in four Tests and seven Twenty20 Internationals, but failed to have much of an impact with the bat as he averaged 14.12 in the longest format and 12.25 in the shortest format.

While the 33-year-old, who is the Titans’ wicketkeeper-batsman, achieved his dream of representing his country in Test cricket, he admitted that he knew it was time to start a new chapter in his career after Cricket South Africa told him that he would be overlooked going forward.

“It was always my dream to play Test cricket and fortunately I got that opportunity in England,” Kuhn told the Titans’ website. “But after being informed by Cricket South Africa that they were looking past me in all three formats, I was ready to make the decision to move on.

“Playing for Kent will be a great challenge. They are a strong team and have strong brand of cricket and I am looking forward to what I can bring to the side.

“With 12 years of experience playing domestic cricket in South Africa, I have learnt how to get the best out of a team and I want to bring that positive brand of cricket to the County side.

“I am looking forward to the prospect of playing in new conditions. I really enjoyed the SA ‘A’ side tour. It was an example of strong cricket. Hopefully I can replicate those performances for Kent.”

As for his contract with the Titans, negotiations are still ongoing, but the Piet Retief native insisted that he is eager to keep playing for the franchise.

“I have had a memorable time at the Titans. I love playing for the Sky Blues and I hope that can continue next season,” he said.
