India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will captain the Kings XI Punjab in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
Ashwin was one of the franchise’s biggest purchases at the IPL auction last month as they paid INR 7.6 crores to secure his services.
The Kings XI will be aiming to secure their maiden IPL title in the upcoming edition of the tournament, but Ashwin is no stranger to IPL glory as he has won the event twice during his time with the Chennai Super Kings.
“I feel honoured to be trusted with the responsibility of leading such a talented bunch of cricketers,” Ashwin said in a statement on the team’s website. “I am confident of bringing out the best out of team mates. This is indeed a proud moment for me.”
The 31-year-old also made it clear that he has what it takes to lead the Kings XI and be one of their frontline bowlers.
“There is no additional pressure on me as such,” he declared. “I first led my state side in first class cricket when I was 21. I have done it in the past and I am sure that I will enjoy the challenge.”
The Kings XI will start their IPL campaign on April 8 when they take on the Delhi Daredevils.
