India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lashed out at Herschelle Gibbs on Twitter after the former South African batsman made a joke about him.

Ashwin took to the social media platform to post a picture of a new pair of shoes he was given by Nike.

Responding to this, Gibbs said: “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now Ashwin.”

However, the 31-year-old didn’t see the humour in Gibbs’ remark and unleashing a scathing response as he said: “Surely not as fast you did mate, unfortunately I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.”

Ashwin was referring to the match-fixing scandal when South Africa visited India in 2000.

Delhi police charged the late South African captain Hansie Cronje with fixing the ODI series that occurred in March. However, while Cronje initially denied the allegations, he ended up confessing to his crimes.

Gibbs, Pieter Strydom and Nicky Boje were also indicted in the scandal, but while Gibbs and Strydom testified that Cronje had offered them money, Boje denied insists that he was never involved in the scandal.

Ashwin quickly deleted the tweet after being heavily criticised, but replying to the Indian spinner’s comment, Gibbs said: “Can’t take a joke i see. Anyway moving swiftly on.”

In response, Ashwin said: “I totally believed my reply was a joke too, but look how people and yourself perceived it. I am totally game for this sort of fun mate, we shall dine over this sometime.”
