Former Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad has been so impressed with Virat Kohli as of late that he branded the Indian captain as “a genius who is the best batsman in the world”.

Miandad’s comments come after Kohli scored his second century in three games in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa.

Prior to the ODI series, Kohli had never reached the triple figure mark in the 50-over format on South African soil, but having just notched up his 34th ODI hundred in the third ODI in Cape Town, the 29-year-old is now just 16 centuries away from surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds.

Miandad also admitted that he is a big fan of Kohli’s ability to score on a consistent basis in all three formats. In his eyes, that’s what separates a good batsman from a great one.

“What I really admire about Indian batsmen and the reason why they are so successful, is the fact that their batting technique is correct,” he told PakPassion. “In Virat Kohli’s case his batting method is what allows him to score runs not just once but almost every time he comes in to bat.

“If a batsman’s technique is bad, he can put some runs on the board once in a while, but he will not be able to do that consistently which is exactly true in Kohli’s case.

“To me the mark of a great batsman, like Kohli is the fact that he can vary his technique by quickly understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the bowlers. Kohli is a genius who is the best batsman in the world.”

India currently hold a 3-0 lead in the ongoing six-match ODI series against South Africa and they will be looking to seal the deal in the fourth ODI, which will be held in Johannesburg on February 10.
