Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has hinted that current skipper Virat Kohli is capable of surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s phenomenal ODI record.
Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs scored in the format with 18,426. He has also scored the most centuries as he reached the triple figure mark 49 times during his illustrious career.
However, Kohli already has 9,142 runs to his name in ODIs and has also amassed 33 centuries, which puts him only behind Tendulkar.
With the 29-year-old having scored his first ODI century in South Africa in the first match in Durban, Ganguly feels that Kohli could go on to better Tendulkar’s record if he stays fit and carries on performing for the next seven to eight years.
“Virat is really, really special and the more we see him the more we feel that he’s unbelievable,” Ganguly told India Today. “The chase last night was just remarkable. He is a special player. I don’t see a reason why not he’ll get close to Sachin Tendulkar’s record in one day cricket.
“Fantastic, that’s just one word about Virat Kohli. He just gets better and better and better. The sky is the limit for him and it is such a pleasure watching him bat every time on television.
“I think still two of the greatest. One is Sachin and one him. There’s no doubt about it and god knows what’s going to happen in the next 7-8 years he plays for the country if he stays fit.”
