Australia opener Aaron Finch has been ruled out of the opening game of the ODI tri-series against New Zealand due to a hamstring injury.

Finch missed the last two ODIs against England due to the same problem and since he has not made a sufficient recovery, he will be on the sidelines when Australia go up against the Black Caps on Saturday.

With Finch out, it is likely that D’Arcy Short, who has taken the Big Bash League (BBL) by storm, will make his international debut. The other possibility is having big-hitting batsman Chris Lynn open the batting.

However, stand-in captain David Warner remained tight-lipped on who would replace his opening partner.

“He didn’t feel like he was up,” Warner was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. “He went through some run throughs yesterday with the medical staff, he said he sort of felt it a little bit. We didn’t want to risk him going into this tri-series with this first game. He’s going to be on ice definitely.”

Following their clash with New Zealand in Sydney, Australia will take on England in Hobart on February 7.
