Uncapped all-rounder Sam Curran has been called up to England’s Twenty20 squad for the upcoming T20 tri-series, which also involves Australia and New Zealand.

Curran, who plays for Surrey, has yet to make his international debut in any format, but was drafted into the Twenty20 side as a replacement for batsman Joe Root, who accepted the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) offer to get some rest and relaxation.

Most recently, the 19-year-old was representing the Auckland Aces in the Super Smash, which is New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

In the nine games he played, Curran scored 157 runs, which included a half-century, at an average of 26.16. He also took nine wickets at an average of 32.55.

Curran will join up with his brother Tom and the rest of the England team ahead of the fifth and final ODI against Australia in Perth on January 28.

The T20 tri-series will begin on February 3, with Australia facing New Zealand in Sydney. England’s first game will be on February 7 when they take on Australia in Hobart.
