Adelaide Strikers opener Alex Carey thumped a breathtaking century to lead his side to an 11-run win over the Hobart Hurricanes.

The Strikers’ victory puts them at the top of the Big Bash League (BBL) standings, while the Hurricanes occupy third place.

Electing to bat first, the Strikers got off to a scorching start as Carey and Jake Weatherald took the attack to the Hurricanes right from the get-go.

The duo were looking in sizzling form and despite doing everything possible to get a breakthrough, the Hurricanes could only watch as Carey and Weatherald piled on the runs.

The pair ended up putting together a 171-run partnership, which is the joint second-highest stand in BBL history behind the 172-run partnership amassed by Rob Quiney and Luke Wright back in January 2012.

During their epic stand, Carey brought up a fabulous hundred, while Weatherald raced past his fifty.

In the end, the Hurricanes had to wait until the 18th over to get their first breakthrough as it came via a brilliant run out from Jofra Archer, which saw Weatherald dismissed for a 52-ball 65 that included five boundaries and four sixes.

Carey was on his way back to the pavilion the very next ball as he was cleaned up by Archer for 100, which came off 56 deliveries and included 12 boundaries and four sixes.

With Archer striking twice more in the final over of the innings, the Strikers finished on 187/4 off their 20 overs.

Archer was the only bowler to take any wickets.

Chasing 188 to win, the Hurricanes got off to a brisk start before opener D’Arcy Short was caught behind off the bowling of Michael Neser for 28.

Hurricanes captain George Bailey failed to have an impact with the bat as he was cleaned up by Peter Siddle for seven runs.

Alex Doolan and Ben McDermott kept the Hurricanes in contention with a 102-run partnership, during which Doolan surpassed his fifty.

However, just as McDermott was approaching his own half-century, he was sent packing by Ben Laughlin for a 29-ball 45, which included four boundaries and a six.

Despite Doolan going on to make an unbeaten 70, which came off 55 balls and included four boundaries and three sixes, the Hurricanes ended up falling short of their target.

Neser, Laughlin and Siddle claimed one wicket each.

Carey was named Man of the Match.
