Pace bowler Suranga Lakmal has been named as Sri Lanka’s new Test vice-captain ahead of the two-match series against Bangladesh, which begins on January 31.
Lakmal has established himself as Sri Lanka’s go-to pace bowler and made his presence felt during the recent tour of India, where he took seven wickets in the first Test in Kolkata in November.
Joining Lakmal in the pace department will be Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara. Chameera hasn’t played Test cricket since December 2016, while Kumara’s last Test match came in August last year.
Spinner Akila Dananjaya will have a chance to make his Test debut after enjoying a run of splendid form in the limited overs formats.
Meanwhile, Kusal Mendis returns to the side after being dropped for the tour of India in order to regain his form and confidence.
Danushka Gunathilaka, whose only Test match came in July last year, has also been drafted into the squad at the expense of Sadeera Samarawickrama, who struggled in the Test series against India as he scored 74 runs in the three-Test series at an average of 12.33.
Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, all-rounder Dasun Shanaka and left-arm pace bowler Vishwa Fernando suffered the same fate as Samarawickrama.
