Out-of-favour Australia opener Matt Renshaw has expressed his desire to break back into the Test side for the upcoming Test series in South Africa in March.
Renshaw was omitted from Australia’s Test side for the Ashes due to his disappointing run of form in international cricket and on the domestic circuit as well.
Cameron Bancroft replaced him at the top of the order, but failed to shine during the Ashes as he was limited to 179 runs at an average of 25.57.
While the 25-year-old was unable to make his presence felt against England, it is likely that he will keep hold of his spot in the Test squad for the tour of South Africa.
Despite this, Renshaw is not giving up just yet.
“You want to try and play in as many Test series as possible,” Renshaw was quoted as saying by SBS News. “You see the South African team playing against India at the moment, it’s a strong outfit.
“If I can get the opportunity to go over there and score a lot of runs it will be really good for my confidence and my game.”
Renshaw also admitted that he can empathise with the situation Bancroft finds himself him as he had to endure a lot of criticism after his run of bad form.
“I know the scenario he’s been in and I think it’s tough,” Renshaw said. “You don’t want people to do badly when they’re playing for their country, you want them to do well when they’re playing for their country.
“He could be a bit hard-done by, the media has obviously been playing it up quite a bit. He’s got the backing of the coach and the captain.”
