Hobart Hurricanes opener D’Arcy Short continue his sublime run of form as he smashed a record-breaking 122 not out to lead his side to a three-run win over the Brisbane Heat.

Short’s innings was the highest score made by a player in the Big Bash League as it surpassed Luke Wright’s 117 for the Melbourne Stars in their clash against the Hurricanes in January 2012.

The Hurricanes’ win leaves them in fifth place on the standings, while the Heat are in fourth.

Choosing to bat first, the Hurricanes lost opener Alex Doolan early on as he was clean bowled by Mark Steketee for nine runs.

Short and Matthew Wade made up for the dismissal of Doolan as they amassed a 64-run partnership, during which Short brought up his fifty, before Wade was caught by Mitchell Swepson at long leg off the bowling of Ben Cutting for 16.

Short and Ben McDermott kept the runs flowing with a 55-run stand before McDermott, who made 19, before Cutting’s second victim.

Short took over from that point and ended up finishing unbeaten on 122, which came off 69 balls and included eight boundaries and eight sixes.

Thanks to him, the Hurricanes concluded their innings on 179/4.

Cutting and Steketee picked up two wickets apiece.

Chasing 180 to win, the Heat made a fantastic start to their innings as captain Brendon McCullum and Sam Heazlett put together a 64-run partnership before McCullum was caught by Hurricanes skipper George Bailey at cover off the bowling of Cameron Boyce for 33.

Joe Burns only made 13, while Heazlett went on to score 45 off 33 deliveries, which included four boundaries and two sixes, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Short.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals after Heazlett was sent back to the pavilion, the Heat kept themselves in the game and found themselves needing 13 runs to win off the last over.

Even though Dan Christian conceded two wides off the first ball, he gave away seven runs off the next five balls.

With four runs separating them from victory, the Heat could not get the job done as Brendan Doggett was caught by Jofra Archer at long-on for three runs.

Boyce was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Archer, Short and Christian claimed one wicket each.

Short was named Man of the Match.
