England batsman James Vince and opener Mark Stoneman are set to retain their places in the Test squad after head coach Trevor Bayliss said that they will “probably get another couple of games to show us what they’ve got”.
Both Vince and Stoneman failed to live up to expectations during the recently concluded Ashes series, which Australia won 4-0.
Vince featured in all five Tests and scored 242 runs, which included two half-centuries, at an average of 26.88.
As for Stoneman, he accumulated 232 runs, which also included two fifties, at an average of 25.77.
Despite their struggles, the duo are likely to be included in England’s squad for the two-Test series in New Zealand in March and April.
“It gets down to when is the time to move on and personally I think people like Stoneman and Vince probably get another couple of games to show us what they’ve got,” Bayliss was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “I think at times during this series against what is probably close to the best bowling attack in the world in their home conditions, they have shown they can play a bit.
“I think they have done enough without anyone really pushing them from behind and they probably deserve another opportunity.”
Vince was heavily criticised for being repeatedly dismissed by chasing wide balls outside his off-stump.
Bayliss acknowledged that this was was a technical flaw in Vince’s game and added that the 26-year-old will have to fix it.
“We have all seen it… he’s looked as comfortable as anyone in the runs he has scored here but just makes a mistake and gets out,” the 55-year-old, who will step down from the England head coach role after the 2019 Ashes, said. “They have been similar each time and that frustrates him more than any of us. That is something he has to work on.”
