Adelaide Strikers captain Travis Head and opener Alex Carey hammered 53 and 59 respectively to lead their side to an eight-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars.

As a result of their victory, the Strikers returned to the top of the BBL standings, while the Stars continue to languish at the bottom as the have lost all five of their games.

The Stars’ decision to bat first backfired early on as Ben Dunk, Kevin Pietersen and Peter Handscomb were dismissed in the first six overs.

To make matters worse, Marcus Stoinis, who got off to encouraging start, was caught by Ben Laughlin at long-off off the bowling of Rashid Khan for a 29-ball 39.

Glenn Maxwell took over from that point as he dominated the 61-run partnership he put together with Sebastian Gotch.

Even though Gotch ended up departing for 14, Maxwell continued to attack until he was eventually caught by Head off the bowling of Peter Siddle for 60, which came off 39 balls and included seven boundaries and a six.

Thanks to Maxwell, the Stars finished on 151/6 off their 20 overs.

Rashid, Siddle, Laughlin, Billy Stanlake and Michael Neser picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 152 to win, the Strikers got off to a great start as Carey and Jake Weatherald amassed a 50-run partnership before Weatherald was stumped by Handscomb off the bowling of Maxwell for 18.

Carey and Head kept the runs flowing with a 74-run stand, during which Head brought up his fifty. However, he was unable to make the most of it as he was caught by James Faulkner off the bowling of Stoinis for 53, which came off 32 balls and included five boundaries and three sixes.

Carey went on to make 59 off 52 deliveries, which included four boundaries and a six, as the Strikers reached their target with eight balls to spare.

Maxwell and Carey claimed one wicket each.

Head was named Man of the Match.
