Perth Scorchers batsman Ashton Turner hammered a scintillating 70 to lead his side to a nail-biting five-wicket win over the Melbourne Renegades.

As a result of their win, the Scorchers returned to the top of the Big Bash League standings, while the Renegades occupy third place.

Choosing to bowl first, the Scorchers got an early breakthrough as Renegades opener and captain Aaron Finch was caught behind off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson for two runs.

Marcus Harris and Cameron White helped the Renegades recover from their early blow as they amassed a 65-run partnership.

However, just as Harris was on the verge of bringing up his fifty, he was caught by Turner at point off the bowling of Andrew Tye for 48, which came off 28 balls and included six boundaries and two sixes.

White and Tom Cooper kept the runs flowing as they put together a 98-run stand, during which both batsmen surpassed their half-centuries, before Cooper was removed by Tye on the penultimate ball of the innings.

Cooper scored 57 off 34 balls, which included five boundaries and four sixes.

White went on to make 68 off 55 deliveries, which included four boundaries and three sixes, as the Renegades finished on 185/3.

Tye was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Johnson took one.

Chasing 186 to win, Mohammad Nabi gave away two wides on the first ball, but made up for it as he had Michael Klinger caught behind for a golden duck.

David Willey and Hilton Cartwright managed to add 44 runs before Cartwright was stumped by Tim Ludeman off the bowling of Brad Hogg for 22.

Willey and Turner kept the scoreboard ticking with an 87-run stand, during which Willey surpassed his fifty.

However, he was unable to make the most it as he was dismissed by Kane Richardson for 55 off 41 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes.

Turner went on to make 70 off 32 deliveries, which included three boundaries and five sixes, before he was run out by Dwayne Bravo.

Even though captain Adam Voges fell for one, Ashton Agar struck an unbeaten 26 to help the Scorchers get across the finish line on the penultimate ball of the match.

Nabi, Hogg and Richardson claimed one wicket each.

Turner was named Man of the Match.
