Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the head coach of the Delhi Daredevils for this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ponting does have experience coaching an IPL franchise as he previously held the same position with the Mumbai Indians from 2015 to 2017.

Ponting will replace Paddy Upton and ex-India batsman Rahul Dravid, who stepped down from the position due to the BCCI’s conflict-of-interest regulations as he is also in charge of India’s Under-19 team and the country’s A squad.

“We are glad to announce our new head coach for IPL 2018 and it is none other than the legend, Ricky Ponting,” the Daredevils announced via their Twitter account.

The Daredevils had been in contention for a playoff spot last season, but they struggled towards the end of the group stage and eventually finished sixth on the standings with six wins in 14 matches.

Going into the 2018 IPL, the Daredevils have retained three players – Rishabh Pant (INR 8 crore/Us $1.26m), Chris Morris (INR 7.1 crore), Shreyas Iyer (INR 7 crore).
