The Hobart Hurricanes handed the Adelaide Strikers a seven-run loss, their first in the ongoing Big Bash League season, thanks to opening batsman D’Arcy Short’s superb innings of 96.

Short also put on a show in the Hurricanes’ last match as he struck a scintillating 97 to guide his side to a nine-run win over the Sydney Thunder on New Year’s Day.

Choosing to bat first, the Hurricanes got off to a fantastic start as Short and Alex Doolan amassed a 60-run partnership before Doolan was caught behind off the bowling of Rashid Khan for 29.

Short and Ben McDermott kept the runs flowing with a 51-run stand, during which Short brought up his fifty, before McDermott was dismissed by Rashid for 18.

Despite Hurricanes captain George Bailey only making one run, Short continued to take the attack to the Strikers and ended up making 96 off 58 balls, which included nine boundaries and four sixes, before he was removed by Billy Stanlake.

Dan Christian fell for seven runs, but wicketkeeper Matthew Wade struck an unbeaten 20 to help the Hurricanes score 183/5 off their 20 overs.

Rashid and Stanlake picked up two wickets apiece.

Chasing 184 to win, the Strikers made an awful start to their innings as openers Alex Carey and Jake Weatherald were taken out by Jofra Archer and Clive Rose for two and seven runs respectively.

Colin Ingram and captain Travis Head steadied the ship with a 102-run partnership, during which Ingram surpassed his fifty, before Head, who made a 32-ball 44, became Archer’s second victim.

Ingram proceeded to score 66 off 44 balls, which included nine boundaries and two sixes, before he was brilliantly caught on the boundary off the bowling of Tymal Mills.

Despite Ingram’s dismissal, the Strikers continued to inch ever closer to victory, but with Jake Lehmann and Jonathan Wells falling in successive deliveries in the final over of the match, it spelled the end for the Strikers as they wound up falling short of their target.

Archer was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Rose and Mills claimed one wicket each.

Short was named Man of the Match.
