Hilton Cartwright smashed a brilliant 58 and Andrew Tye took a five-wicket haul as the Perth Scorchers beat the Melbourne Stars by 13 runs on Boxing Day.

Stars captain John Hastings would have been delighted with his decision to bowl first as James Faulkner took out William Bosisto on the fourth ball of the match.

Michael Klinger only made one run before he became Faulkner’s second victim, while Ashton Turner was clean bowled by Michael Beer for a duck.

With the Scorchers struggling at 10/3, Cartwright and captain Adam Voges came to the rescue with an 83-run partnership, during which Cartwright brought up his fifty, before Voges was caught behind off the bowling of Hastings for 35.

Cartwright went on to make 58 off 53 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes, before he was removed by Adam Zampa.

Even though David Willey fell shortly after, the Scorchers managed to finish on 142/6 thanks to Ashton Agar’s 21-ball 33.

Faulkner was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Beer, Zampa, Hastings and Marcus Stoinis chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 143 to win, the Stars were dealt an early blow as opener Ben Dunk was dismissed by Mitchell Johnson for six runs.

Peter Handscomb fared no better as he was caught by Bosisto at deep midwicket off the bowling of Tye for eight runs.

Tye struck again four balls later as Luke Wright was caught by Agar at mid-off for a 14-ball 21.

Things went from bad to worse for the Stars as Kane Richardson clean bowled Glenn Maxwell for four runs before Tye took out Stoinis for 13.

Despite Rob Quiney and Faulkner scoring 25 and 35 not out respectively, the Stars fell short of their target as they finished on 129/8.

Tye was the most successful bowler with five wickets, while Johnson and Jhye Richardson claimed one wicket each.
