Marcus Stoinis smashed a breathtaking 99 and took three wickets, but it all went in vain as the Brisbane Heat defeated the Melbourne Stars by 15 runs.
Choosing to bowl first, the Melbourne Stars got their first breakthrough in the second over of the match as Michael Beer took out Brisbane Heat opener Jimmy Peirson for one run.
Captain Brendon McCullum and Sam Heazlett made up for the loss of Peirson with a 49-run partnership before Heazlett was dismissed by Beer for 14.
McCullum went on to make 40 off 22 balls, which included four boundaries and two sixes, before he was caught by Glenn Maxwell at midwicket off the bowling of Stoinis.
Despite losing Heazlett and McCullum in quick succession, the Heat managed to recover through Joe Burns and Alex Ross’ 82-run partnership, during which Burns brought up his fifty.

However, soon after, he was caught behind off the bowling of Stoinis for 50, which came off 28 balls and included four boundaries and three sixes.
Ross and Ben Cutting kept the runs flowing with a 51-run stand before Ross was sent packing by Scott Boland for a 36-ball 51, which included a boundary and two sixes.
With Cutting going on to smash an 18-ball 35, the Heat finished on 206/7 off their 20 overs.

Stoinis was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Beer took two and Boland chipped in with one.
Chasing 207 to win, the Stars lost opener Ben Dunk on the second ball of the innings, while Kevin Pietersen, Maxwell and Luke Wright followed soon after.
However, Stoinis and James Faulkner stemmed the bleeding with a 137-run stand, during which Stoinis sailed past his fifty and neared his hundred.

However, disaster struck when he was one run away from the milestone as he was run out by substitute fielder Marnus Labuschagne for 99 off 51 balls, which included six boundaries and six sixes.
Even though Faulkner went on to score an unbeaten 38-ball 47, the Stars ended up falling short of their target as they finished on 191/6.
That is extra large!
