Sri Lanka all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has been given three demerit points and fined 75 percent of his match fee after he was found guilty of ball tampering.

The incident occurred during in the 50th over of India’s innings the second day of the ongoing Test in Nagpur.

Shanaka was caught “picking up an area on the ball next to the seam several times” during the live broadcast of the match, which led to the International Cricket Council (ICC) charging him under Article 2.2.9 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to “changing the condition of the ball”.

“These are early days in Dasun’s career and I am sure this sanction will ensure he is more careful when maintaining the condition of the ball in the future,” match referee David Boon said.

Should the 26-year-old pick up another demerit point within the next 24 months, he will be suspended for one Test, two ODIs or two Twenty20 Internationals.
