South Africa all-rounder Wayne Parnell has been sidelined for the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh due to a groin injury.
Parnell was nursing a similar injury prior to the two-Test series, which South Africa won 2-0, and has been replaced by uncapped Lions all-rounder Wiaan Mulder.
Meanwhile, uncapped Dolphins all-rounder Robbie Frylinck has been drafted into the Proteas’ Twenty20 squad, but pace bowler Kagiso Rabada and spinner Imran Tahir have both been rested.
“Playing in the CPL didn’t do my chances of selection any harm, it probably helped my cause,” Frylinck was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “I have had a long career and it became a case of never worrying about gaining higher honours. I have always backed myself to be good enough and now we can hopefully see.”
South Africa’s convener of selectors Linda Zondi added: “The selection of Robbie provides another opportunity to explore our depth in the important all-rounder position. Apart from his bowling strengths he has a proven record as a finisher with the bat.”
Despite Rabada and Tahir missing, South Africa will still have a lot of firepower in the batting department as captain Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and JP Duminy are all in the side.
Tahir has been South Africa’s go-to spinner in limited overs cricket, but with the 38-year-old being rested, Tabraiz Shamsi and Aaron Phangiso have been given an opportunity to make their presence felt.
“Imran remains our first-choice spinner in both the limited overs formats but we also need to develop depth in this important area,” Zondi said.
All-rounder Chris Morris and seamer Lungi Ngidi were not considered for selection as the former has yet to play for the Titans as he is still recovering from a back injury.
As for Ngidi, he was named in the Titans’ squad for the ongoing round of first-class matches, but he was not part of the playing XI.
South Africa’s T20 Squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Robbie Frylinck, Beuran Hendricks, David Miller, Mangaliso Mosehle, Dane Paterson, Aaron Phangiso, Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi
