Dane Paterson has yet to make his ODI debut

South Africa have included uncapped pace bowler Dane Paterson in their squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh next week.

Paterson was drafted into the side after fellow seamer Morne Morkel was ruled out for the rest of the Bangladesh series with a side strain, which he sustained while bowling in the first Test in Potchefstroom.

Paterson has represented the Proteas in four Twenty20 Internationals to date and taken five wickets at an average of 23. Four of those wickets came in a losing effort against England in June.

“Dane did very well in the T20 International Series against England earlier this year, particularly when it came to death bowling. We now want to see if he can do a similar job in the 50 overs format,” South Africa’s convener of selectors Linda Zondi said.

The other fast bowlers in South Africa’s squad are Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell and Andile Phehlukwayo.

Imran Tahir is the lone specialist spinner as Keshav Maharaj was left out, while all-rounder Chris Morris was not considered for selection as he is still recovering from a back injury.

AB de Villiers will be part of South Africa’s batting line-up, along with all-rounder JP Duminy, who recently retired from Test cricket.

Temba Bavuma also found a place in the side as he made a century in his only ODI to date, which came against Ireland in September last year.

The ODI series between South Africa and Bangladesh gets underway on October 15 in Kimberley. The second and third ODIs will be held in Paarl and East London on October 18 and 22 respectively.
