West Indies opener Evin Lewis will miss the fifth ODI against England after being diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his ankle.

Lewis suffered the injury when he edged the ball onto his ankle while batting during the fourth ODI against England at The Oval on Wednesday.

Lewis was on a career-best 176 before he had to be stretchered off the field. His knock, which was the fourth-highest by a West Indian player in ODI history, came off 130 balls and included 17 boundaries and seven sixes.

Thanks to Lewis, the West Indies finished on 356/5, but they were unable to win the match as England secured a narrow six-run win via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after the rain cut England’s innings short.

Despite losing the game, West Indies captain Jason Holder, who scored a career-best 77 and put together a 168-run partnership with Lewis, heaped praise on the 25-year-old for taking the attack to England and helping the West Indies amass a massive total.

“It was outstanding by Evin, he set the tone and kept the momentum, it was unfortunate we lost him when we did but it was an outstanding innings,” Holder said after the match. “He had to adjust, the situation asked him to. He’s one of those players that when he gets in he goes big, he showed that today.”

Holder will also miss the fifth ODI as he will return to Barbados following the death of his uncle. In his absence, Jason Mohammed will take over as captain, while all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite is expected to take Holder’s spot on the roster.

England hold a 3-0 lead going into the fifth ODI in Southampton on Friday, but despite having no chance of winning the series, the West Indies will be looking to finish their tour of England on a high.
