Pat Cummins will travel back to Australia after the fifth ODI against India

Australia have decided to rest pace bowler Pat Cummins for the three-match Twenty20 series against India, which gets underway next month.

Cummins will return home after the fifth ODI in Nagpur in order to “refresh, both mentally and physically” prior to the Sheffield Shield season and the Ashes, which will begin in November.

Cummins returned to Australia’s squad midway through the four-Test series against India in March and since then, he has been a regular face in all three formats.

“Pat has played a considerable amount of cricket this year after a long period away from the game due to injury,” national selector Trevor Hohns was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “His body has handled the return to international cricket well, but we believe the best plan for him ahead of the Ashes Series is to return home to refresh, both mentally and physically, before he prepares for Sheffield Shield cricket.”

Australia currently trail India 2-0 in the ongoing ODI series and will be looking reduce the deficit in the third ODI in Indore on Sunday.

The Twenty20 series between India and Australia gets underway on October 7 in Ranchi.
